Additional Power Outage Troubleshooting and Tips
The power is out! Now what?
Confirm the Outage
- If you can, check to see if your neighbors have power.
- If your neighbors do not have power, contact AP&T to report the outage.
- If your neighbors do have power, check if your home’s breakers are tripped.
- If a problem is not found with your home’s breakers, proceed to reporting the outage.
Report the Outage
For all properties: Call: 1-800-478-7785 option 4
Please Note When Reporting:
- AP&T does not constantly monitor social media pages. Calling in and reporting the outage is the only way to be assured that the line crew is notified.
- The AP&T staff receive texts, calls, and emails when you call in to report an outage – even if you don’t speak directly with a lineman.
- Be prepared to answer a few questions to help the staff isolate the outage.
- You may speak with someone who does not live in your community. Be assured, they are relaying your information to the local line crew that is actively working on the outage.
Turn off your appliances
You can take actions in your home that will help us restore power as quickly as possible. When an electric outage occurs, a heavy burden is placed on the system at the moment power is restored. This high demand can cause an overload on the system, and you could lose power once again. To prevent this, turn everything off in your home except a few lights.
In addition, make sure the surface elements on your range have been turned off and that other heat-producing appliances are off as well. If left on, those elements can pose a serious fire hazard after the power has been restored.
Stay Safe
- Keep your distance from downed power lines – they may look dead, but they could still be energized.
- Use flashlights instead of candles.
- Practice Generator Safety
- Do not operate a generator in an enclosed or partially enclosed area.
- Do not connect your generator directly to your home unless you have a transfer switch. This can cause back haul on the electrical lines and be detrimental to the safety of the line crew.
Be Prepared
Power interruptions often show up as blinking displays, flickering lights, or momentary blackouts on TVs and computers. These disturbances—known as flickers, sags, and surges—have different causes, but you can reduce their impact. Use devices like uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and surge protectors to keep electricity flowing and protect electronics. Surge protectors absorb excess energy, preventing most surges from reaching your devices.
Outages and disturbances can also stem from issues inside your home, such as:
- Circuit overloads
- Short circuits
- Damaged wiring
- Poor grounding
If you suspect electrical problems, contact a qualified electrician.

Additional Telephone Outage Troubleshooting and Tips
Prior to making contact with AP&T for assistance with your telephone service, these steps can help you determine why your phone isn’t working:
- Check to see if all your telephones are hung up.
- Perform a visual inspection of all exposed wiring and connections for damage or loose connections.
- When there is more than one outlet, check each instrument at each outlet to determine if proper operation can be obtained from any outlet. If proper operation is obtained from any outlet, the trouble has been isolated to an instrument or house wiring.
